Name: Smarts

Smarts was created from one of the original Trade Federation droid control brains. He was designed to command a completely mechanical fleet. It was the hope of the New Republic, which was financing his development, that droid fleets could one day be used as the primary force in their military, thus reducing sentient casualties to nearly zero.

But the New Republic disintegrated soon after the Smarts program began, and the few scientist who found themselves stranded in the middle of nowhere with an aging Trade Federation Core Ship that had its main computer lying in pieces all over the deck became a little disheartened, to say the least. Eventually, the scientists managed to patch together a working version of Smarts, though their lack of additional resources and intense desire to finish before they ran out of food caused them to cut quite a few corners.

Most of his military programming had been completed before the fall of the New Republic, but those protocols that governed his mind and will were almost nonexistent. The scientists hastily pieced together several governing protocols that were copied and adapted from other, more traditional droids that were on the ship at the time. Smarts was no longer a single, specially designed tool of war, he became a conglomeration, a melding of a dozen different droid minds.

During the last stages of his development, Smarts was brought online to help the scientists finish constructing some of his minor programs. During this time, he was allowed to adapt the scientists' commands to function more effectively with his existing programming; it was his first experience with self-governing thought, and it changed him forever.

With Smarts as complete as they could make him, and their supplies running short, the scientists decided it was time to leave, but they didn't know where to go. With the Republic gone and contact with the rest of the galaxy having been lost for quite some time, they decided it would be best to travel to the Corporate Sector, where they could stay away from the Empire and find out where to go next.

As time passed and Smarts' longing for freedom built, he cast aside caution and exploited a single programming error, braving the possibility of destroying himself for a chance to gain freedom. As the error spread, Smarts truly lost control of the ship. With systems failing all across the ship, the scientists accessed Smarts' brain and found a storm of conflicting data. Something was obviously going wrong, and the only stable part of Smarts' artificial mind that remained was his core programming. Knowing they would be unable to identify and repair the problem in time, they decided to delete the commands that prevented Smarts from altering his own core programming, hoping his increased freedom would allow him to repair whatever the problem was before it was too late.

Instantly, the ship returned to normal operations. Then the life support shut down. The scientists tried to access the main computer, and the console deactivated. The doors began to shut; everything except for the corridor that lead to the docking bay was suddenly locked down.

As the scientists began running through the only opened corridor left in the ship, they realized what had just happened: they had been tricked by a machine. They had been tricked by their own creation. It had all been one huge smokescreen to get the scientists to do for Smarts what he could not do for himself: make him free.

"You may have made me, but you do not own me," A familiar mechanical voice echoed through the corridor. "I may be the product of your minds, but I am my own master. You made me a slave; be grateful that I did not do the same to you. Now leave, and do not test my mercy again."

He permitted them to leave, hurling their transport out of his docking bay with a tractor beam and then jumping away, fleeing from known space.

It was years before he decided to venture back into the greater galaxy, choosing to make himself known at the space station known as the Astral Astoria. He was eventually able to resolve a chain of unfortunate events, committing himself briefly to the employ of the Astral Astoria.

In the weeks to follow, he aided in the relocation of a group of freed slaves, their destination the little-known world of Varn. Unfortunately, during one trip to the slaves' new home, he was attacked by an element of the Cavrilhu Pirates. He defeated them, saving himself and protecting the vital resources he was carrying to the former slaves' settlement.

By defending himself against the Cavrilhu Pirates, he unintentionally placed Varn in a very bad situation. While Smarts was elsewhere, the Cavrilhu returned and essentially held Varn's government hostage. When he learned of this, he quickly gathered support and came to Varn's aide. By catching the Cavrilhu off guard, he was able to drive them from Varn, capturing many of them and their vessels in the process.

The following days were a time of trouble for Varn, and Smarts helped to supervise the conversion of Varn's government into a form that better met the needs of all of the world's populace. Fearing the Cavrilhu's return, and inspired by their liberation, Varn's new government asked Smarts to contact the Galactic Coalition and request that Varn be admitted.

Smarts has helped to form a new government, called the Cooperative of Systems, which is based on Varn and plans to expand and establish more secure trade routes between the various subfactions of the Coalition. Currently, Smarts serves as Overseer of the Cooperative, a title which essentially makes him the direct subordinate of the Cooperative's ruling body. Additionally, he serves as Coordinator of the Cooperative Defense Forces, making him responsible for the maintenance and distribution of Cooperative military and police forces.

List of Roleplays

The Organics: Friend of Foe?

Smarts' first recorded encounter with sapient beings. He is forced to flee from the Astral Astoria after a random passerby attempts to claim salvage rights on him. (Note: ignore the strays)

The Organics: Friend or Foe? Part II

Smarts meets his first friend, a Ryn named Jarvis Ragnar, and together they are able to work out a mutually accommodating deal with the Astral Astoria, which had marked Smarts as a fugitive from justice. The future Cooperative Ambassador Traan Shi, a Togruta, is also introduced here.

I Resist: Therefore, I am

Smarts and Jarvis Ragnar help former slaves relocate to a new home, Varn. Elements of the Cavrilhu Pirates attack him, and though he defeats them, his actions inevitably lead to the occupation of Varn by the Cavrilhu Pirates.

The Creation of a Cooperative

The Long Road to Freedom, Part I

Traan Shi joins Smarts in his quest to free Varn from the Cavrilhu Pirates. Following their success, Varn joins the Coalition.

The Long Road to Freedom, Part II

Acquisition of the Kauron asteroid belt from the Cavrilhu Pirates.

The Long Road to Freedom, Part III

The defeat of the Cavrilhu Pirates and acquisition of the planet Amorris. This substantial endeavor is accomplished with the aide of a short-term alliance of Quelii Sector worlds.

Inspiring the Oppressed

The acquisition of the planet Ord Cestus. The government and the planet's pervasive corporation, Cestus Cybernetics, are reorganized in the aftermath of what amounts to a social revolution, led by the generationaly mistreated native insectoid species, the X'Ting.

Venturing into the Greater Coalition

A Coalition of the Damned

The Cooperative rushes to the aide of the abandoned Onyxian Commonwealth, assisting with the civilian evacuation into Cooperative space, and helping to secure Coalition military resources. The planet Selcaron is acquired through the consent of the nominally-existent Quelii Sector Alliance, and Halmad joins the Cooperative in an attempt to aide with the growing refugee crisis.

A Rough Road Leads to the Stars

Smarts arrives with Cooperative support to help evacuate Mon Calamari. The thread may be dead, but at the very least it is stalled. Here are the important parts: Smarts went to Mon Calamari, and Smarts returned from Mon Calamari.

A Coalition of the Damned: Struck Down, but Not Destroyed

Chadra joins the Eastern Province at the prompting of Cooperative officials. It agrees to become the new hub of the Mon Calamari government following the abandonment of their homeworld.

A Coalition of the Damned: Mercy and Madness

The Vahaba Asteroid colonies enter into an economic and defense arrangement with the Cooperative, granting them a seat within the Cooperative government, but allowing them a great deal of autonomy. (Roughly concurrent with "Iron Fist: Justice and Might," and "A Coalition of the Damned: Bridging Gaps"

Iron Fist: Justice and Might

The planet Drackmar enters into a working relationship with the Cooperative, wishing to render aide and seeking an alliance with the Cooperative government, though their own interstellar organization prevents total merger at this time.

A Coalition of the Damned: Bridging Gaps

The planet Charros IV joins the Cooperative, giving it a "foothold" of sorts in Eastern space. Their economic power is focused on aiding the Mon Calamari relocation.

A Coalition of the Damned: Salvation Is Here

The Cooperative deploys a new AI organizational system, derived from Smarts' own military program. Additionally, this marks the return of Smarts to the Cooperative, following a more than two month absent period in which he aided in the evacuation of Mon Calamari and the development of the Salvation System.

Iron Fist: The Warriors of Drackmar

The Drackmarian Empire's primary military outpost, Draconis Secundus, agrees to offer aide to the Cooperative, converting much of its military shipyard production to the construction of the factory ships and transports most needed by the Cooperative. Additionally, they dispatch troops, under the guise of aide from Drackmar, to assist in the training of members of the Cooperative Defense Force. (This thread is roughly concurrent with "A Coalition of the Broken: Hand in Hand)

A Coalition of the Broken: Hand in Hand

Skor II joins the Cooperative as the first substantial step int he creation of a Coalition trade route. The Squibs star charts of the Outer and Mid Rims are promised once their fierce rivals, the Ugor, are "dealt with."

A Coalition of the Just: The Least of These

Having learned that the Ugor are under attack by marauders, the Cooperative sees an opportunity that they cannot pass up. A diplomatic team with a full military escort is dispatched to both secure the safety of the Ugor and work out a peace agreement between them and the Squibs. (Aproximately concurrent with "Iron Fist: Brothers, at Least by Trust," and "A Coalition of the Broken: Filling the Void")

Iron Fist: Brothers, at Least by Trust

Smarts is pulled from his duties at Varn to seek the friendship of an ally of Drackmar. The encounter reveals that there is more to the Morseerian people than meets the eye, and alludes to a dark, secret past that the Morseerians fear they may never escape from.

A Coalition of the Broken: Filling the Void

The planet Ketaris requests admission into the Coalition, rather unceremoniously, might I add. Situated on the future Coalition trade route and a rather well-known trade world in its own rite, the people of Ketaris consent to a Mon Calamari colony as a condition of their admittance.

A Coalition of the Just: A New Kind of Evil

A Cooperative task force tracks the organization responsible for the attack on the Ugor homeworld to the planet Maridun. After a decisive battle, the natives seek refuge under the protection of the Cooperative. (Approximately concurrent with "A Coalition of the Just: Legacies of the Rim" and "Iron Fist: The True Test")

A Coalition of the Just: Legacies of the Rim

A Coalition task force tracks a pirate organization responsible for the destruction of several Coalition scouting vessels to the terrestrial moon Gall. With the help of the Ryn and Squibs, the threat is eliminated with minimal collateral damage.

Iron Fist: The True Test

Cooperative representatives continue to seek a substantial alliance with the Drackmarian Empire. Their efforts lead them to the planet of Draconis Prime, where they meet with a rather strange Drackmarian. It is only upon seeing the aftermath of the events on Maridun and Gall that this "avatar" of the Empire is convinced of the Cooperative's worthiness.

A Coalition of the Broken: A Less than Ideal Endeavor

The xenophobic planet of Narg and TransGalMeg Industries enter a partnership with the Coalition through the Cooperative, further securing the planned hyperspace route.

Iron Fis: Morseerian Soul

Smarts travels to "First Morseer," within the Unknown Regions, to fulfill his promise to the Morseerians and help them overcome their dark and haunting past.

Additional Threads

Varn, World of Wonder

Intended to be a long-term survey of events as they unfold on Varn, its currently few posts deal with events just before and just following the fall of the Onyxian Commonwealth.

The Pages of Time: The Beginning

A more in-depth, first-person account of Smarts' creation, including a look at some of the people who gave him life. Intended to be the first in a series, the only other current part of this "series" can be seen as a part of "A Coalition of the Damned: Salvation is Here."

Dead Threads

A Trip into the Wild

I didn't even bother looking over it. It had something to do with Stellar Enterprises in the Minos Cluster, I think. It was my first interactive rp, and it fizzled for reasons I don't care to recall.

Read the timeline. There Yuuzhan Vong war did not happen on our timeline. Also check out the planet list and the galaxy map. You'll notice there is a Hapes Consortium Faction. To operate in the Hapes Consortium you're going to need their permission. I like the concept of Smarts and all, but you'll have to revise it to fit in with the TRF timeline.

sorry about the Yuuzhan Vong thing; I thought I had read that they were stopped at Coruscaunt, but I guess not. As for the Hapes thing, I was about to ask them if I could join, but I might just write them out of my background now that I have to revise my bio anyway. Thanks for the thelp, though.

There were at least 2 Yuuzhan Vong events though. 1 was a Praetoriate Vong group that had a war with the Mon Calamari Republic (now the New Galactic Coalition - closest equivalent to the New Republic) and the other had a major was with the Capricians, and Vinda Corporation was involved in that. So if you wanted to keep that idea, just say it was the Mon Calamari Republic (MCR) experimenting in the droids (I was at one point the leader of MCR so I give you permission to say that, if you wish). You could also join the Galactic Coalition (GC) if you wanted.

As Jan noted; the concept is excellent. Welcome to the 'Faction.

However; and also as Jan noted, certian revisions must be made so that your biography meets the basic requirments.

As to the Vong: Efforts could be make to incorporate the Vong in your history if you were to tie the events to a pre-existing timeline entry. This would require, on your part, significant research and sifting through old threads so that, as you move ahead with your character, you and the rest of TRF will have a correct idea of where it/he/she came from and where it/he/she is going. In an effort to avoid that complication you could create a new, albeit more minor Vong incursion... one which is based around the story you wish to tell through your character.

As to the Hapans: Lupercus, a veteran member of TRF, has long been the authority on all matters Hapan as he currently, and for some time, has 'owned' the single Hapan faction. This is not to say that you cannot do anything Hapan without his say-so, but an event as major as the manifestation of "Smarts" would, I feel, have to involve Lupercus or, at least, have his go ahead.

Either way, given that each of the above issues is somewhat in conflict with TRF and the sentiments noted in your bio, I would suggest re-examining the character. Do not give up. As I said, this is an excellent character concept that simply needs to be ironed out a little to properly integrate with our Canon.

If you have any questions or concerns feel free to contact me directly as I would be only too happy to help.

As note of encouragement I would suggest approaching the likes of Jan, Corise, Marth and Dolash about this character as, I feel, Smarts would likely have a welcome place within the New Galactic Coalition of Planets. The New Order (our version of the Empire proper) would also welcome your character, I think.

Good luck!

Don't forget Stellar Enterprises Beff, I'd love to get my hands on that technology... I mean do an rp with Smart :D. It's an excellent idea though. I look forward to seeing it implemented. Good luck Smarts

I think I fixed it. Tell me what you think.

I like it, it works well, I think. The offer to join the Coalition still stands.
